My 12-year-old daughter practically had to drag me into the musical “Six,” currently raging on Broadway, in which Henry VIII’s six wives all have their say about what happened to them. In this, the whole show is a kind of lesson in antiracism, regardless of whether a viewer is consciously aware of it. In that way, it is a quintessentially modern work of musical theater. Beyond the lessons “Six” teaches, the performers manage some of the deftest work on Broadway I’ve ever seen. So, “Six” can change your lens in an antiracist (and antisexist) way — while also turning you on to art, wonder, curiosity and excitement.

Compared to the dour, dutiful sewing circle serving Katherine of Aragon at the British court, the French matriarchs were pistols. “Anne found herself in a world in which women could exercise power in strikingly different ways,” write Guy and Fox. Stereotyped by convention as a conniving hustler bent on building the Boleyn brand, Thomas is positioned more interestingly here as a kind of geopolitical Zelig. It would prove the right time to catch the eye of the strapping 34-year-old king. Henry had never before encountered a woman as dazzling as Anne, with her French flair and intellectual self-confidence.

There are three million shipwrecks scattered across the ocean floor. Only a tiny number of these have been explored. This 117-foot craft had sunk in May 1682 after hitting a sandbank, while carrying the Duke of York, the future King James II of England. But only in June last year was the wreck formally identified—and hailed as the most significant maritime discovery since Henry VIII’s warship the Mary Rose was raised in 1982. Another find is a silver teaspoon, with an engraving that suggests it belonged to one of James’s huntsmen, Thomas Jory, a “saucy fellow” who hid under a seat on a rescue boat as the Gloucester went down.

The success of Hilary Mantel’s ‘Wolf Hall’ trilogy is often credited with reinvigorating sales and publisher interest in the historical-fiction genre. Booker Prize-winning author Hilary Mantel, whose acclaimed reconsideration of Tudor politics in “Wolf Hall” received major Broadway and television adaptations, died Thursday, her publisher HarperCollins said. She was 70 years old. King Henry VIII’s chief minister Thomas Cromwell, historically portrayed as an artless bully in the centuries before Ms. Mantel’s books, was reimagined in the “Wolf Hall” trilogy as perhaps the first great political power broker.
